Topic
In this teaching, we wish to introduce to the students the main electrodes (specific electrodes, oxygen sensor, glucose biosensor…) and the principles of the electrochemical methods used in the field of pharmaceutical and biomedical analysis. We consider to focus on the enzyme electrochemical biosensors, notably the glucose biosensor, and on the ion selective electrodes, e.g. calcium. These electrodes are used in the blood glucose and in the blood gas detections.
To get deeper insights into the basic processes of several biosensors, thermodynamics and kinetics of weak molecular interactions will be discussed in detail. Examples of host-guest interactions of bioactive guest molecules with cavity-shaped hosts (cyclodextrins, calixarenes, cavitands, cucurbiturils) and their immobilization onto the glassy carbon or platinum electrode surfaces by electro-polymerization will be presented.
In this teaching unit, we will give online asynchronous lectures in order that the students acquire good knowledges in electrochemical sensor uses. Then, we will offer online laboratory sessions (recorded videos of the concepts developed in theoretical classes). Finally, we plan to distribute a project to the students. By mixed group of 4 persons (two students from the University of Rennes 1 and two students from the University of Pécs), the students will collaborate to work on publications of their choice in the field of sensors. The validation of this teaching unit would consist in the delivering of a summary report of the bibliographic work. In this project, the students would be guided by the collaboration of the two teachers (Rennes 1 and Pécs). A guided class directed by the two professors would be offered to explain the objectives of the team project. A final class directed by the two professors would be offered to review and summarize the team contributions.
In 2021-2022, this project would involve the pharmacy students from the Universities of Rennes 1 and Pécs and could be proposed to the other pharmacy students within the EDUC alliance from 2022-2023, and maybe also to the medical students. Students will be known through the most recent scientific results about the pharmaceutical applications of the methods listed above, will have ability for successful application of the related measuring and data-evaluating methods. The curse gives considerable support to earn the drug-designer attitudes of pharmacists.
