What is the Undergraduate Research Society?

The Undergraduate Research Society (URS, Hungarian: TDK) is one of the most important forms of academic talent development and research training at the University. It gives pharmacy students the opportunity to become directly involved in scientific research during their undergraduate studies.

Students can join the research group of an institute or department and work under the guidance of a project supervisor. Through this experience, they become familiar with the research process, scientific methods, and the practical challenges of research. URS work is not only about producing new scientific results: it also provides an opportunity to develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, independence, and a deeper understanding of a chosen scientific field.

URS students can present their results at the annual local URS Conference, as well as at national and international scientific meetings. Students of our Faculty have achieved excellent results at these events for many years. The experience and research results gained through URS work can also provide a strong foundation for a successful graduation thesis or Dean's Competition Paper and may serve as an excellent starting point for future PhD studies.

Participating in undergraduate research requires perseverance, independence, and responsible work from both the student and the project supervisor. At the same time, it provides valuable professional experience that can be useful throughout a future academic, research, or pharmaceutical career. Many outstanding Hungarian scientists began their research careers as undergraduate research students.

Students are encouraged to explore URS opportunities from their second year of study. Depending on the chosen research topic, it is advisable to contact a prospective project supervisor no later than the beginning of the third year. Current research topics are also available on the websites of the individual institutes and departments, helping students identify research areas and supervisors that match their interests.

The URS Committee of the Faculty of Pharmacy maintains close cooperation with the URS Committee of the Medical School. In many cases, the scientific work of pharmacy students is carried out in collaboration with medical institutes and clinics. URS therefore offers students the opportunity to gain first-hand research experience, develop their scientific skills, and become active participants in the University's research community.
